Midsummer Shoot at Rolls Royce bowmen of Sherwood
Well shooting in the winter on those long dark nights is still enjoyable, and can still be good fun, no clothing for outdoors is needed, no boots are needed, and no sun block needed.
But we all look forward to those long summer evenings, and this year was certainly worth waiting for.
As Rolls Royce held their annual Midsummer shoot at Hucknall, (which is always held on the Wednesday evening closest to the longest day of the year). Pastures made the most of the evening with their excellent results.
The round is always a Short National, and this year saw a mixture of sunshine and mixed showers but with no real wind it made for an enjoyable few hours.
Although Pastures didn’t succeed in the raffle (that was an unusual result) we did make up for it in awards.
Congratulations go to Laura Kendrick for her 2nd place in the Girls Recurve with 496,
Boys Recurve saw Ross Watson in 1st place with 600 and Ben Cousins won 3rd place with 385. Tom Taylor won in the Junior Compound scoring 640 (only 8 points off a maximum 648!).
Julie Cousins had a great 1st place win with 276 in the Ladies Longbow .
Whilst Paul Garner came 3rd in the Gents Longbow with 359.
And in the Gents Recurve 2nd and 3rd place were won by Tony Dolby with 616 and Lee Chlechowicz with 606. And Congratulations also go to Mike Emery who achieved completely dry legs in the rain thanks to some excellent waterproofs.
For anyone who can make a relaxed good natured evenings shoot from 7pm onwards in the middle of summer next year we can recommend it.

Trip to Sherwood fired Thomas towards his target as an archer
Encouragement for all beginners, "I started off like any other beginner but I had lots of practice and in 2002 I joined a club in Mickleover. They supported me and got me into local competitions, and it was then I realised I was quite good.".....READ ON.....

DAC National at Kedleston Hall
Sun, Wind and Wildlife
What a glorious sunny day perfect for archery, if only there wasn’t any wind. Unfortunately it was windy, very windy and blustery. Even given the conditions everyone was eager to shoot. The venue being the lawn at Kedleston Hall, there are few venues with such a great backdrop where competitions are held. It was pleasing to see so many Archers attending the competition, and even more please to see so many representing Pastures Company of Archers, 12 by my count.
Whilst only being a round where 6 dozen arrows are shot it was not without incident. During the shoot, as we were on the shooting line a very brave (maybe even stupid) Pheasant boldly strode up the field, just in front of the targets. Walking from the ha-ha towards the Hall it picked it route wisely, the longbow archers were closest to the Hall, as the pheasant did not stop upon approaching the longbow targets Fast was called and the shoot was halted. It was then up to the Judges to encourage the Pheasant to move on. This was undertaken by Sandra Bennett, it was to the amusement of all the archers, and the spectators, to see Sandra attempt to chase the pheasant away, Sandra did manage this successfully.
At the change of distance break everyone still seemed in good spirits, although complaints about the wind could be heard from all the archers, everyone needs an excuse as to why they didn’t hit the Gold. Sue Margett had managed to hit the Gold (in fact it was in the ten ring, with a longbow!), unfortunately on the wrong target (she was not the only one to do this during the day). With only two dozen more arrows to shoot we were all looking forward to the end of the shoot, with Mike Emery of course looking forward to the Raffle.
Once again Fast was called, this time the culprit was Sue Margett. Sue had skilfully managed to shoot the flag, with her arrow dangling from the flag it was hanging in front of the target and so had to be removed, Sue really was pulling out all her trick shots.
As the scores were announced it was soon evident that Pastures had done rather well. Ross Watson was 1st in the Junior Boy Category, Sue Margett was first in the Ladies Longbow with Julie Cousins placing 2nd in the Ladies Longbow (I think this is Julies’ first medal at an open tournament, I am willing to stand corrected, well done Julie). Lee Chlechowicz finished 2nd in the Gents Recurve with Phil Middleton finishing 3rd. Pastures Archers also picked up the Team Trophy, the team members being Lee Chlechowicz, Phil Middleton, Ross Watson and Mike Emery. Well done to everyone who picked up a medal and also well done to all those Pastures Archers who shot on the day (Sue Simpson beat her previous best Kedleston score by 3 points, no mean feat in that wind!).
